World Of Warcraft Skybox

Hey guys I would like to share some recent 360 panoramic hand painted skyboxs I did for World of Warcraft 7.3: Shadow of Argus. I have had a lot of fun and learnt a lot on the project.

  1. World Of Warcraft Skybox 2
I'm standing on the control area of the vindicaar watching azeroth slowly rotate around. The extra detail and novelty of being able to see the northern hemisphere spin around is something I didn't expect.
Who ever went to the extra effort of working on this and putting it in deserves an extra serving of cookies on their coffee break.

World Of Warcraft Skybox 2

Yeah it looks really cool, but it is not in proportion to how far the ship travels in space (in the cinematic), surely it should be smaller
Seeing that blue globe slowly spinning around... we could nearly forget that Azeroth is so much more than just a home for heroes.
I looked up and could only think back to all the hours spent travelling across that surface, hunting for experience or items or some other treasure time and time again, year after year.
From Argus, we can even see features like the Maelstrom on Azeroth! I wonder if the city of Zin-Azshari would have been visible from orbit, before the Well of Eternity shattered the land so long ago.

How can Azeroth rotate if it's flat? Why do we only see a small portion of a large globe? We need answers! The Azeroth Science Committee has been publishing false reports stating the planet is round when it is flat. There is a reason why it's called the forbidden 'sea'. All the boats that go there and don't return actually fall off the edge of Azeroth never to be seen again. The skybox on Argus is an illusion being used against us by the Legion to play us into their hands!

Please dont bring that into this thread its not funny.

It's a joke, buddy.

The Forbidding Sea and The Veiled Sea are the same ocean. I think the names were given by the earliest sentient beings on Azeroth. My theory is that there's something there that doesn't want us there. And strangely enough I'll go with demons. I think the Black Prince was onto something when he showed his vision. If you stand long enough at Stair of Destiny there's demons walking through the Dark Portal (I've seen this since mid-TBC). These demons have to be going somewhere if they're not going to Broken Isles. If not then their destiny is a second base that they've had on Azeroth since before the War of the Ancients.
In Chronicles it's said that Kalimdor (before it blew up) was the largest continent of Azeroth, implying there are other continents. So there should still be a fairly large continent on the other side of the map.
I don't think we're going to see it soon though. Still enough to do on the original map. But who knows we'll get a rotatable map in the future.
My favourite part is the fact Quel'thalas is missing.
fake news! #flatazeroth
You can't just see the maelstrom, but the upper halves of both kalimdor and the eastern kingdoms. Additionally northrend and what appears to be a large island area which I assume is the broken shore. But the icing on the cake is that these are not just cut and paste maps, they've been modified so that they look like land masses from an orbital perspective. I really love this effort someone (or persons) went to.

Apparently Gilneas too? So I've been told.
Theyre using the Classic satellite overworld map that's used in the mini maps.

Basically this one for Eastern Kingdoms and Cataclysm Kalimdor.
No northrend, no broken isles and southern areas are blocked off unless someone glitches their way under the map or far sights at the right spot.
ALSO Azeroth is showing it's spinning but Argus isn't. Quite strange.

Both Northrend and Broken Isles are visible on Azeroth from Argus.

For some reason EK uses pre-cataclysm map (Gilneas is missing) but Kalimdor uses post-calaclysm map (Azshara is in the shape of the Horde symbol). They also haven't pasted Quel'Danas on the EK map from the Outland map, despite numerous fanmaps having done this.
The planet does look awesome, but these stupid oversights on EK really drag it down. The absence of Quel'Danas is really easily seen :/

Looking at Azeroth above you and thinking about the adventures you had there, then look around on the landscape of Argus and just thinking about what adventures you could have there. I wasn't born a hero, hero was a mantle forced upon me. First and foremost I was an adventurer, an explorer of dark caves and roaming of the fields. And that's what Azeroth is for me, from Warcraft: Orcs and humans to Warcraft 3 and over to World of Warcraft; an adventure. And that's why that skybox has a certain nostalgic meaning to me, it's been such a massive part of my gaming life.
And seeing it like that from Argus, it's just perfect.
If only they'd put effort into giving us content to do rather than an art gallery to idly stare at
This is World of Warcraft not World of Warhol

Oh look who's back to whinge again. What happened to your other thread?
There are interesting things you can see on this Azeroth from space.
The yellowish Eastern Plaguelands are easily visible, as well as Lordamere lake and Dalaran Crater.
When the planet rotates to Kalimdor, Azshara is the easiest object you can see, with the island where Bilgewater Harbor is located.
